Alexander Guerry came to Sewanee as Vice Chancellor in 1938 after serving as Headmaster of Baylor School and President of the University of Chattanooga.  In his negotiations with the University, he agreed to come only if the Regents and Trustees agreed to end scholarships for football and to consider leaving the Southeastern Conference.  Vice Chancellor Guerry came to Sewanee with a five-point program: expand the pool of qualified students, have a vigorous, but non-subsidized athletics program, enhance the beauty of the campus, stress responsibility, and meld religion and education.  He worked tirelessly to convince others of the wisdom of non-scholarship athletics and his efforts led to the eventual creation of Division III of the NCAA.
