Remembering the Iron Men of 1899

On Nov. 9-15, 1899, the Sewanee Football team took a six-day train trip, covering 2,500 miles. The Iron Men of 1899 won five games, all on the road, and without allowing a point. "And on the seventh day, they rested."

Support the Sewanee 1899 Documentary, "Unrivaled"

Norman Jetmundsen C'76 and David Crews C'76 are compiling a documentary on the historical 1899 football team entitled Sewanee 1899: Unrivaled. In November 2021, there was a Purple Carpet premiere of the documentary on campus. The documentary is available for purchase on DVD and streaming through the sewanee1899.org website.

Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame 

In 2004, the 1899 team was enshrined into the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame as a part of the inaugural class. 

Additionally, Henry "Diddy" Seibels (2004), Ormond Simpkins (2005) and Luke Lea (2018) are currently enshrined in the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame.

 

Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame

In 2016, the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame inducted the 1899 team into the Hall as a part of the Historical Achievement Award. Read the TSHF Press Release here.


National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame

In 1973, Henry "Diddy" Seibels was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
