Tigers roll past Hendrix in SAA Tournament opener

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Nov. 4, 2016)  The Sewanee field hockey team opened the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament with a 5-1 win over Hendrix, Friday.

The Tigers scored three goals in the opening half and then added two more in the final 35 minutes.

After Grace Shapiro gave Hendrix an early 1-0 lead with only 7:52 off the clock, Sewanee answered back in a big way. The Tigers scored their first goal only three minutes later when Sarah Barry found the back of the cage.

As play continued freshman Ceara Caffrey pushed Sewanee in front for good at the 23:06 mark. Emily Sloan then added one late goal in the first half with only 57 seconds left on the clock.

Out of the break, Sewanee had second-half goals from Katie Wilson and Hannah Tompkins.

As a team, Sewanee outshot the Warriors 38-10. The Tigers also added nine corners.

Sewanee will now play host and No. 1 seed Rhodes at 11:00 a.m., Saturday.
