Ramsey nets hat trick in 3-2 win over Centre in CFHC Quarterfinals

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Shepard Ramsey recorded a hat trick to lift Sewanee past Centre, 3-2, in the quarterfinals of the Collegiate Field Hockey Championships on Thursday morning in Fond du Lac, Wis.

With the score tied in the 50th minute, Keegan Southall was taken down in the circle, drawing a penalty stroke. Ramsey stepped up and buried the attempt into the right side of the cage to secure the game-winning goal.

Sewanee applied pressure early, as Southall forced Centre goalkeeper Eliza Hensley into a save in the opening minute. Eight minutes later, Southall again created a chance that resulted in a penalty corner, but Hensley turned away the Tigers' look.

The Tigers continued to threaten throughout the second quarter. After a defensive save by Centre's Tori Drepaul and multiple cleared corners, Sewanee broke through on its fourth corner of the period. Natalie BeVier sent the insert to Ramsey at the top of the circle, who played it into the circle and collected a rebound mid-air before finishing to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Just three minutes into the third quarter, Caroline Bridges found Ramsey in front of the cage, and she converted for a 2-0 Sewanee advantage.

Centre responded with two goals off penalty corners in the final five minutes of the third quarter to even the score, despite a defensive save from Kylie Carter.

Ramsey delivered the final say with her converted stroke in the fourth. Centre generated one final push in the closing minutes, but Sewanee goalkeeper Miriam Hussaini made a key stop to preserve the victory.

Sewanee outshot Centre 23-8, including a 13-5 edge in shots on goal, and earned eight penalty corners to Centre's six. Hussaini finished with three saves, while Hensley made 10 for the Colonels.

With the win, Sewanee advances to the CFHC Semifinals and will face No. 1-seeded Mary Washington on Friday at 11 a.m.
