Despite a dominant first half, the Sewanee Tigers succumbed to the Redlands Bulldogs, 25-20,  in women's lacrosse action Saturday morning. The Tigers jumped out to a 14-10 halftime lead, but Redlands opened the second half with 12 unanswered goals and managed to hold on for the win. The Bulldogs kept the pressure on for the rest of the game and outscored the Tigers 15-6 in the second half to clinch the victory and move to 4-0 on the year.

Redlands scored the first goal of the game after just 16 seconds of play and scored again before Sewanee fired back with 3 straight goals to take a 3-2 lead in just the sixth minute of play. The momentum changed sides several times in the first half, with the Tigers and the Bulldogs each going on a four-goal scoring streaks in the half.

After trailing 14-10 at the half, Redlands struck just 10 seconds into the second period to cut the Sewanee lead to 14-11. The Bulldogs went on to score 12 unanswered goals until Sewanee junior Meg Welton (Germantown, Tenn., Houston ) found the back of the net in the 16th minute. Sewanee mounted a comeback with just minutes to play and scored four unanswered goals, but ran out of time before they could close the gap.

Welton, along with sophomore Molly Arnold (Brooklandville, Md., Bryn Mawr), combined for 15 of Sewanee's 20 goals.  Junior Page Carpenter (Baltimore, Md., St. Paul's School for Girls), junior Mary Grace Bowring (Lexington, Va., Rockbridge County High School), and sophomore Olivia Vietor (Bethesda, Md., Episcopal) each contributed one goal apiece.

Sewanee recorded 34 total shots to Redlands' 37, and Sewanee goalkeepers Amy Nusbaum (Norfolk, Va., Norfolk Academy) and Theresa Monypeny (Memphis, Tenn., Hutchison) combined for 10 saves. Sewanee won 21 draw controls and converted 6 of 7 free-position shots.

“The difference in the game was time of possession in the second half,” said Sewanee Head Coach Michele Dombrowski. "We were definitely able to execute when we had possession, which is a big positive going into our next game.”

With the loss, Sewanee drops to 0-2. The Tigers will play host to Kenyon College on March 9th. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
