SEWANEE, Tenn. 3/24/10 – The Emory Eagles defeated Sewanee 22-6 in D-3 baseball action today at Montgomery Field in Sewanee.
Emory jumped on the scoreboard quickly on a three-run homerun by Dan Molnar in the top of the first inning. The Eagles added two more runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead.
The Tigers responded in the bottom of the third inning with four runs. With one out Joe Reilly (Milton, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) was hit by a pitch and Alan Komorowski (Rochester, N.Y., Aquinas Institute) doubled to right centerfield to put runners at second and third. Reilly and Komorowski were chased home on single by Connor Liston (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Episcopal). Taylor Irwin (Brentwood, Tenn., Battle Ground Academy) and Franklin Pogue (Nashville, Tenn., Father Ryan) followed with a single and a double, respectively. Chris Mauro (Washington, D.C., St. Alban's) then singled to drive in two more Sewanee runs cutting the Emory lead to one run at 5-4.
Emory picked up four runs in the top of the fourth inning and two more in the sixth to extend the lead to 11-4.
Sewanee made the score 11-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Irwin doubled home Thomas Pillow (Ripley, N.C., Ripley) who had reached on an infield single. Pogue singled up the middle to drive in Irwin.
The Eagles exploded for nine runs in the top of the eighth and added two more in the ninth to make the final score 22-6.
Irwin led Sewanee at the plate with a 3-for-4 day including a double and an RBI. Pogue added two hits and an RBI. Liston and Mauro each had a single and two RBI.
Starting pitcher Wilson Nealy (Nashville, Tenn., Montgomery Bell Academy) suffered the loss on the mound for the Tigers working three innings allowing five runs, none of which were earned, on six hits. The Tigers used eight pitchers in the game.
Sewanee falls to 6-13 on the season. The Tigers will host SCAC foe, Birmingham Southern, in a three-game series this weekend with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
