Tigers rally late but come up short against Rhodes

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Aidan Petrocco tallied three hits and three RBIs, and Max Kilburn scored three runs, but Rhodes held off a late Sewanee rally to defeat the Tigers, 10-8, to take the final game of the series in Southern Athletic Association action on Sunday afternoon.

Sewanee finished with 12 hits in the contest, with John Bagwell adding two hits, Charlie Teel adding two RBIs, and Will Jennewein and Sebastian Leinberger each driving in a run.

Rhodes jumped out early with two runs in the first inning and extended its lead in the third behind a pair of home runs, taking a 5-1 advantage.

Sewanee responded in the second inning as Owen Andress doubled to lead off the frame before Jennewein delivered an RBI double down the right field line. Petrocco followed with an RBI to even the game at 2-2.

After Rhodes added two more runs in the third off a two-RBI home run and two in the fourth to build a 7-2 lead, Sewanee chipped away in the fourth inning. Kilburn doubled and later scored on a single from Leinberger, and Petrocco added an RBI double to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Rhodes continued to apply pressure, adding a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to extend its lead to 9-4.
Sewanee threatened in the sixth with back-to-back singles from Kilburn and Jennewein, but Rhodes turned a double play to escape the inning.

The Tigers began their comeback in the eighth as Charlie Teel launched a two-run home run to right field, trimming the deficit to 9-6.

Rhodes answered with a run in the ninth to push the lead to 10-6.

In the bottom of the ninth, Sewanee mounted a final rally. Bagwell drew a leadoff walk before Kilburn and Jennewein worked walks to load the bases. Leinberger drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home a run, and Petrocco followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to one.

However, Rhodes recorded the final out with the tying run on base to secure the 10-8 win.

Austin Graber took the loss after allowing seven runs over three innings, while the Sewanee bullpen combined for six innings of relief.

The Tigers head on the road this week to face Maryville on Tuesday before returning to conference play at Centre on Friday and Saturday.
