SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Tyler Pinson's three-run homer in the ninth put Sewanee ahead for good and
Ryan Moll got the final three outs for the save in a 6-5 victory over Berry College in the first game of Saturday's baseball doubleheader in Mount Berry, Ga.
The Tigers (11-6-1, 1-1 SAA) lost the second contest, 13-3, in seven innings.
In the opener, the two teams traded single runs for the first seven innings, with Pinson's RBI groundout in the first giving Sewanee a 1-0 edge.
Charlie Teel drove in a run with a double in the third and his RBI infield hit in the seventh tied the game at three.
In the ninth
Sebastian Leinberger singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Aidan Petrocco. With two outs Teel was intentionally walked and Pinson followed with a three-run blast, his fourth of the season, for a 6-3 Tigers advantage.
Riley Uhls hit a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth for the Vikings and reliever
Childers Winn walked Andrew McAdams followed by a single from Tanaka Mukono and then hit Ethan Finch, loading the bases. Moll induced a 4-6-3 doubleplay from Chase Edmonds, which plated a run, and after a walk to Charles Pulaski, Chance Edmonds flied out to end the game.
Petrocco, Teel and
Spencer Yu each collected two hits and Teel drove in two runs. Leinberger posted one hit with a walk and scored twice for the Tigers.
Taj Donald worked six innings in the start, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Eli Potter (3-1) tossed two-plus innings, giving up one run on two hits, and Moll recorded his first save.
Berry starter Cam Welsh allowed three runs on five hits with four walks in 6.1 innings. Eric Fountain (1-2) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on two hits in one inning.
The Vikings scored 10 runs on eight hits in the bottom of the first inning to take control of game two.
Leinberger plated a run with a double in the second inning and Pinson hit a two-run homer in the seventh for Sewanee's only runs.
John Parker Rambo (1-2) gave up seven runs, five earned, on five hits on one-third of an inning while Berry's John Mark Christopher (3-0) for the win, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts.
The two teams conclude the series Sunday with a single game at 11 a.m. CT.
