SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Tyler Pinson and
Charlie Teel each drove in two runs and
Spencer Yu collected two hits and scored twice, backing up seven strong innings from
Austin Graber in a 7-4 series-clinching victory for Sewanee over Berry College in baseball action Sunday in Mount Berry, Ga.
The Tigers (12-6-1, 2-1 SAA) scored three times in the third inning, including an RBI triple from Teel, a ground ball from Pinson that plated a run and a run-scoring double by
John Bagwell, and added three runs in the sixth.
Sebastian Leinberger doubled in a run, Yu plated another with a single up the middle and Pinson's bases-loaded walk scored another.
Graber (2-1) allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings, striking out four with no walks. He retired the side in order in the second, fifth and sixth innings and worked around an error in the third. Berry plated single runs in the first, fourth and seventh and stranded just two baserunners against the righthander.
Davis Jones allowed a single but retired the side in the eighth and
Jack Merril gave up two singles and two wild pitches for a run but struck out the side in the ninth to finish off the victory. Leinberger collected two hits with one RBI and a run scored.
Chance Edmonds posted three hits, Tanaka Mukono added two hits and two runs scored and Garrett Long registered two hits for the Vikings (11-7, 1-2). Berry starter Eric Fountain (1-3) gave up four runs, two earned, on six hits in four innings to suffer the loss.
The Tigers got on the board in the first after a Yu walked and he went to third after an errant pickoff throw. Teel's infield single plated Yu for an early advantage.
The Vikings answered in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff double from Lang, who advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chaz Moore and scored on a sacrifice fly from Riley Uhls.
In the third Yu singled with one out and Teel followed with an RBI triple to right. Pinson reached on an error, with Teel scoring on the play, and Bagwell doubled home a run, extending the lead to 4-1.
Berry got a run back in the fourth with a one-out single from Ethan Finch and a two-out double by Edmonds, though he was thrown out trying to take third to end the inning.
The Tigers added to the lead in the sixth, with everything starting with two outs when
Owen Andress was hit. Leinberger followed with an RBI double and
Aidan Petrocco was hit before a run-scoring single up the middle from Yu. Teel and Pinson both walked, forcing in a run for a 7-2 lead.
Mukono singled and stole second with one out in the seventh and a single by Edmonds put runners on the corners. Charles Pulaski's two-out single plated a run but Hayden Gilbert lined out to end the inning.
Mukono and Edmonds both singled to leadoff the ninth for Berry and a pair of wild pitches allowed Mukono to come across, but Merril struck out Jackson Warren, Pulaski and pinch-hitter Xavier Byams to end the inning.
Sewanee hosts Rhodes College for a three-game series next weekend beginning Saturday with a Noon doubleheader.
