Spencer Yu posted two hits and
Charlie Teel reached base twice, but Sewanee left eight runners on base and hit into two doubleplays while Maryville College took advantage of three Tigers errors in a 6-0 Scots victory in baseball action Tuesday afternoon in Maryville, Tenn.
Sewanee was shutout for the first time since April 20, 2024 at Berry College, a span of 46 games.
Maryville (15-10) plated single runs in the third, sixth, seventh and eighth innings and two runs in the fifth. Eight Tigers hurlers allowed eight hits with four walks, one hit batter and struck out seven, but the Scots posted four hits with runners in scoring position compared to one for Sewanee.
George Kell (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing one run on two hits with one walk in one inning of work. He also hit a batter and had an error on a bad pickoff throw.
Layton Bilderback,
Ryan Moll and
Jake Walling each tossed scoreless innings for the Tigers (13-9-1), but Maryville continued expanding the lead with all of the single runs.
Cody Boisvert (2-0) worked six shutout frames for the win, giving up three hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Xavier Resto pitched two innings and Gavin Mohrman tossed a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.
Yu singled and
Charlie Teel was hit, both with two outs in the third inning, before
Tyler Pinson flied out to end the threat.
Teel walked with one out and
Zach Fortman was hit with two outs in the sixth, but
Benjamin Wilson grounded out to end the inning.
The Tigers had their best chance of scoring in the seventh when
Owen Andress was hit to leadoff and
Will Jennewein walked.
Aidan Petrocco singled to right with one out, loading the bases, and Yu flied out to left but Jennewein was thrown out at third for an inning-ending doubleplay.
The Scots also turned a doubleplay to end the eighth inning after a one-out single by Pinson, but Fortman grounded into a 6-4-3 twin-killing.
Maryville got on the board in the third when Irvin Hernandez singled up the middle with one out and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw by Kell. Masin Hall followed with an RBI single up the middle, though Kell escaped further damage after hitting Det Dettwiller and walking Frank Derner to load the bases. Colin Dunworth flied out to deep left to end the inning.
In the fifth Brayden Evans reached on an error to start the inning and Detwiller followed with a two-run homer to right against
Ben Weiser, extending the Scots lead to 3-0.
Jay Pichardo doubled to left with one out in the sixth against
Holden Phillips and Hernandez then tripled down the rightfield line for a 4-0 edge.
With two outs Dunworth singled up the middle with two outs, stole second and scored on an error on a grounder by Nick Curry.
Hall singled with two outs in the eighth, stole second and plated the final run on a single from Evans.
Sewanee travels to Centre College this weekend for a three-game series beginning with a single game Friday at 5 p.m. CT.
