Tigers close out regular season with 5-1 victory

Box Score

Sewanee's Fritsl Butler struck first, finding the net just seven minutes into the contest, as the Tiger women's soccer team ran away with a 5-1 victory over Birmingham-Southern this afternoon.

Butler drew first blood at the 7:05 mark, when she put an unassisted shot past Birmingham-Southern goalkeeper Jordan Papas. The Tigers extended their lead to 2-0 twelve minutes later when sophomore Bess Goodman found the net in the 19th minute. Goodman's goal came off an assist from Faith Spencer.

The Panthers cut the Sewanee lead to one at the 35 minute mark when a header by Alicia Plotky found its' way past Sewanee goalkeeper Virginia Zakas to make it 2-1. The two teams would hold on for the rest of the half and the Tigers headed to the locker room holding on to the one goal lead.

Sewanee didn't take long to find the net in the second half. Spencer added to the Tiger lead just six minutes into the period when she scored an unassisted goal, making it 3-1 in favor of the visiting Tigers. Spencer added another score less than three minutes later, knocking in a goal on an assist by Tiki Slay to give Sewanee a 4-1 lead early in the second period.

Spencer wasn't done helping the Tigers rack up goals just yet, though. In the 88th minute, Goodman picked up her second goal, bringing her season total to thirteen. Goodman's goal was assisted by Spencer, who now has five assists on the year. The goal brought the final score to 5-1 in favor of Sewanee. The Tigers have won eight of their last nine games after starting the year at 4-5.

The host Panthers held the edge in shots, fifteen to twelve, and the teams were even in shots on goal, with eight apiece, but Sewanee made the shots count in picking up the win. Sewanee finished with three corners, to Birmingham-Southern's five. Zakas picked up seven saves for the Tigers, while Pappas finished with three.

Sewanee wraps up the regular season with a 12-6 overall record and a 6-4 record in SCAC play. BSC falls to 10-7 overall and 5-5 in conference play. Sewanee will graduate five seniors from the 2010 squad: Butler, Slay, Hadley Mates, Kate Willingham, and Caroline Beitel.
