The Sewanee women's soccer team put on a dominating performance this afternoon at Puett Field, but couldn't find the net until the second half. They found it more than enough in the second period, though, and put the Warriors of Hendrix College away, 3-0.
The Tigers controlled the ball for nearly the entire first half. Sewanee took eleven shots in the first half, while not allowing Hendrix a single attempt. The offense created several opportunities, but the team just couldn't quite capitalize and the Tigers and the Warriors headed into the locker room tied at zero.
Faith Spencer (New York, N.Y., Hotchkiss) turned the Tigers fortunes around early in the second half. Just over two minutes into the period, Spencer took a pass from Layne Ezzell (New Orleans, La., Isidore Newman School) and sent a shot past Hendrix goalkeeper Allison Mosely. Spencer's goal gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead at the 42:45 mark of the second half.
Sewanee wasted no time getting on the board again. Just eleven minutes later, Ezzell set the Tigers up for yet another goal. Ezzell sent a pass to Bess Goodman (Greensboro, N.C., Grimsley) and Goodman took a header and sent the ball sailing past Mosely. Goodman's score put the Tigers ahead 2-0.
The Tigers remained quiet for much of the half after Goodman's goal, but with just 3:17 left in the game, Spencer found the goal again. Spencer took a shot, this time on a pass from Goodman, and put it past Mosely to give the Tigers the 3-0 victory.
Sewanee dominated Hendrix all afternoon, out-shooting the Warriors 28 to four. The Tigers took six corner kicks while Hendrix had none. Mosely came up with 14 saves for the visitors and Virginia Zakas (Atlanta, Ga., Westminster) came up with one save to get the shutout and the win.
Sewanee moves to 9-5 on the season and 3-3 in SCAC play. The Tigers head to San Antonio, Texas on Friday to take on the Tigers of Trinity University in another conference match up. The Trinity women are 13-1 overall and 6-0 in SCAC play.
