SAA Release | 2021 SAA Men's Golf Awards
ATLANTA - Announced by the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) on Thursday, three University of the South men's golfers were honored with an All-SAA award, while head coach Nate Parrish was awarded the league's Coach of the Year.
Grayson Maddox earned a First Team selection, while Martinsville, Va. natives Basil Boyd and Woodson Smith were Second Team members.
Maddox finished the 54-hole championship with a 218 (71-73-74), good for second place as he and Kenny Park of Oglethorpe were a part of a three-hole playoff. The Tampa, Fla. native led all individuals with a 4.0 average on par 4s and was fourth on par 5s, averaging 4.73 strokes.
Along with 32 pars and 10 birdies, the sophomore also chipped in an eagle on the ninth hole in the first round. He was one of six individuals to achieve the feat over the three-day tournament.
Boyd carded a tournament score of 228 (73-80-75) as he climbed two spots from Saturday's second round to secure a ninth-place finish. The senior chipped in nine birdies on the weekend and averaged a 3.08 on par 3s, good for second-best in the field.
Smith also finished with a 228 (75-77-76) over the three-day event. Averaging 4.15 on par 4s, the junior recorded a team-best 33 pars, good for sixth-best among the individualists.
Currently in his eighth season as the men's golf coach at the University of the South, Parrish wins his first conference Coach of the Year award on the men's side. In a year of challenges with COVID-19, the men's golf team won its first SAA title in 2021, downing the 2019 champions in Oglethorpe by six strokes.
The Tigers finished the weekend with an 892 (296-295-301), missing the program-low at an SAA Championship by one stroke, set in 2019.
Parrish led Sewanee to its first conference crown in 26 years, the last winning as members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) in 1995.
In 87 years of men's golf at the University of the South, the program has won 14 conference titles, including 12 College Athletic Conference (CAC) crowns from 1965 to 1985.
The University of the South earned the automatic qualification to the 2021 NCAA Men's Golf Championships in Wheeling, W.Va. on May 11-14. This will be the second team appearance in the program's history, joining the 1983 squad.
