Lytle named Men's Golf Head Coach

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee Director of Athletics John Shackelford announced the hiring of Maddux Lytle as the next Sewanee Head Men's Golf Coach. 

"Maddux Lytle offers our men's golf program a smooth transition from last season's record-breaking year to a roster full of new and hungry faces," said Shackelford. "His record as a student-athlete and his years as a head coach position Maddux to be ideally suited to lead Sewanee's men's golf program for many years to come." 

Lytle comes to the Mountain after serving as Head Men's Golf Coach and Fundraising Coordinator at Point University since August 2021. During his tenure, he oversaw all aspects of the program, including recruiting, scheduling, budgeting, travel coordination, fundraising, and student-athlete development. 

"I am honored for the opportunity to join the Sewanee community and lead the men's golf program," said Lytle. "I want to thank Coach Shackelford for believing in me to carry on a program with such a rich tradition of success. I am excited to begin working with our student-athletes and helping them succeed on the course, the classroom, and in their future careers." 

Under Lytle's leadership, Point emerged as one of the top programs in the NAIA, finishing seventh at the 2022 NAIA National Championship, 11th in 2023, and 17th in 2024. He coached multiple NAIA All-Americans and was recognized as a finalist for the Dave Williams Coach of the Year Award in 2022. 

Before taking over the men's program, Lytle served as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's golf teams at Point University. In that role, he assisted with recruiting, practice planning, tournament preparation, player development, scheduling, and team travel. 

Lytle also gained experience as an Assistant Golf Professional at Highland Country Club in LaGrange, Ga., where he coordinated tournaments, leagues, and member events while assisting with daily golf operations. 

A former standout student-athlete at Point University, Lytle helped lead the Skyhawks to Appalachian Athletic Conference team championships in 2017 and 2018. Individually, he was named a semifinalist for the Jack Nicklaus Award in 2018, presented annually to the nation's top collegiate golfer. 

Lytle graduated from Point University in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in business administration and a minor in biblical studies.
