Women's Lacrosse Suffers Overtime Defeat to Eagles

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee women's lacrosse team dropped a 10-9 overtime decision to the Eagles of Bridgewater (Va.) College Thursday evening from Puett Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Eagles posted two straight goals in the first three minutes of the game to get out to an early lead, but the Tigers evened the game with goals by Sarah Strand (21:46) and Grace Zechman (18:05) on free-position attempts.

-Despite the Eagles reclaiming the 3-2 lead with an unassisted goal, the Tigers took the lead on two Strand goals. At the 14:44 mark, she scored a free position goal, and four minutes later, the Natick, Mass. native struck the back of the net to give the home team its first lead of the game, 4-3.

-Bridgewater tied the score again with an unassisted goal with 9:39 left in the half, which would hold until the halftime break.

-The Tigers were able to muster back-to-back goals in a 20-second span, as Hattie Fogarty netted both scores to give Sewanee the 6-4 advantage with 26:36 left in the contest.

-The Eagles responded with three straight goals to reclaim the lead, 7-6, with 15 minutes to go.

-The teams traded goals back and forth for the rest of the contest. Sewanee tied the game at eight goals apiece with a man-down goal by Fogarty at the 4:05 mark.

-After the visitors took the lead again, Fogarty responded with a goal from Zechman at 1:45 on the clock. Sewanee claimed the draw control, but the Tigers were unable to net the game-winner in regulation.

-After a turnover and a Sewanee green card, neither team was able to get the ball into shooting space, and the contest was forced into overtime.

-The Eagles were able to get the draw after a Sewanee foul, and the visitors were able to get the golden goal to secure the victory.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Hattie Fogarty scored five goals and won five draw controls, while Sarah Strand also won five draws and posted a hat trick.

-Grace Zechman scored four points thanks to three assists and a goal. Additionally, Cleo Smith and Hadley Meadows forced three turnovers each.

-Caroline Roncalli (1-3) saved 11 saves in 61 minutes.

BRIDGEWATER KEY STATISTICS
-Madeline Magill recorded four shots to lead the Eagles, while Tori Hudson and Dwyer Neal scooped up six ground balls each.

-Jodie Welsh won five draw controls, while Mikaela Brooks (2-3) posted 10 saves.
