Sewanee Holds Off Birmingham-Southern, 15-11, in Home Opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee women's lacrosse team rallied to a 9-5 second half to defeat the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern College, 15-11, Saturday afternoon from Puett Field in the home opener for the Tigers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-BSC and Sewanee traded two goals in 15 of the 30 first half minutes, with Sarah Strand and Catherine Crigler netting successful shots at the 19:06 mark and the 17:41 mark, respectively.

-The Tigers took their first lead of the contest at the 11:20 mark thanks to a Kelly Thomsen goal from Preston Cooper.

-However, the Panthers responded with a free position goal 19 seconds later to even the score at three apiece.

-After Mary Kate Myers gave the Tigers the lead with 9:26 left in the half, the Panthers, in a 49-second span with three goals to take a 6-4 lead with 4:37 left in the opening period.

-The Purple and Gold responded with two goals late by Alden Woolford (3:23) and Myers (1:51) to even the score at six goals a piece headed into the locker room.

-Sewanee opened the second half with goals from Brooke Winfield and Myers to retake the lead for good.

-BSC scored two goals to push the deficit to 10-9, but the Tigers outscored the visitors, 5-2 in the final 19:21.

-Birmingham-Southern was limited to 24 total shots, nine in the final 30 minutes.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Mary Kate Myers captured a hat trick, scooped up four groundballs and collected an assist in the win.

-Catherine Crigler, Sarah Strand, Brooke Winfield and Molly Elkins each netted two goals apiece for the home team.

-Kit Sommi collected six groundballs, while adding five draw controls and caused turnovers each.

-Amanda Jenkins (1-0) saved four shots in 21 minutes in the cage.

BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN KEY STATISTICS
-Ashley Shepherd scored four goals and totaled four groundballs and caused turnovers each to go along with five draw controls.

-Rachel Stokes also forced four Sewanee turnovers.

-Gracie Murray (1-3) saved 12 shots in full time for the Panthers.

UP NEXT
The weekend homestand concludes Sunday with a 1 p.m. faceoff against Adrian (Mich.).
