TUNICA, Miss. - The 25th-ranked Sewanee Men's Golf team competed in their second tournament in the 2017-18 season, and for the second straight week, the Purple and Gold finished in the top 5 with a fifth place finish at the Rhodes College Fall Classic at Tunica National.
The 19-team, 99-player tournament was designed as a three-round, two-day event, with the first and second rounds on Sunday and the final round on Monday.
As a team, the Tigers finished 16-over-par, 880, but Sewanee totaled the third-lowest score in the final round, posting a 289, two strokes behind eventual champion Emory and six strokes behind UT Tyler.
Gray Matthews began the weekend with a 78 on the par-72, but the sophomore significantly improved throughout the remainder of the three-round tourney. At the end of the second round Sunday evening, the sophomore was in a tie for 45th with a seven-over-par, 151.
On Monday, the Raleigh, N.C. native tied the round-low of 67 in the final round to jump 28 spots to finish in a tie for 17th with a two-over-par, 218.
Finishing a stroke behind Matthews were Tommy Oliver (73-72-74) and Nic Vandeventer (68-74-77), as the duo finished in a tie for 19th place.
Rounding out the Sewanee scoring include Taylor Mottern and Basil Boyd. Mottern finished in a tie for 56th with a 229 (76-77-76), and Boyd fired a 235 (80-83-72).
The Tigers return to the course next week to compete in the National Preview at Greensboro, N.C., beginning on Sept. 24.
