Chiles ties program record with eight-under 64 at Jekyll Island

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sophomore Turner Chiles shot a career-best eight-under par 64 while freshman Aidan Tudor and senior Elias Becker also carded bogey-free rounds of 66 and 67, respectively, leading Sewanee men's golf to a first-place tie Friday after the opening round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate in Jekyll Island, Ga.

The Tigers shot 17-under par as a team in the first round, tied with Huntingdon College and eight strokes in front of Carnegie Mellon. The tournament concludes with single rounds Saturday and Sunday at the Pine Lakes Course at Jekyll Island Golf Club.

All of the Sewanee players started their rounds at No. 10, with Chiles collecting four pars in a five-hole stretch to begin the day. He then reeled off four straight birdies on holes 15-18 to make the turn. On the front nine the Houston, Texas, native made seven pars with a birdie at No. 2.

He eagled his final hole of the day, the par-4 ninth, holing out from 140 yards for the eight-under 64, tying the program record for lowest individual single round. He trails Huntingdon's Cole Humphrey by one stroke.

Tudor netted five consecutive pars to open the round before recording three birdies in four holes to make the turn. The New Market, Md., native registered six pars and three more birdies on the front nine, on holes one, five and seven, shooting six-under 66, tied for third individually.

Becker also played bogey-free golf on Friday with six pars and birdies on holes 13, 15 and 18 on the back nine. The Mexico City, Mexico, native added seven more pars and birdies on holes seven and nine on the front for a five-under 67, tied for seventh.
