SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sophomore
Turner Chiles carded a final-round four-under 68, overcoming a two-shot deficit with four holes to play to claim low medalist honors, while Sewanee men's golf finished third in the team standings Sunday at the Jekyll Island Collegiate in Jekyll Island, Ga.
The Tigers shot three-under par 285 in the final round but dropped a spot in the team standings thanks to rounds of 10-under from Huntingdon College and eight-under by Washington and Lee, who finished second. Sewanee posted a 25-under team score over the three rounds, three strokes behind Washington and Lee on the Pine Lakes Course at Jekyll Island Golf Club.
All of the Sewanee players started their rounds at No. 1, with Chiles posting seven pars and birdies on holes five and eight. On the back nine the Houston, Texas, native added another birdie at No. 12 but recorded a double bogey on the par-3 14
th hole, falling two shots behind Washington and Lee's Jonathan McEwen.
Chiles birdied three of the last four holes while McEwen made three pars and a bogey, giving Chiles a two-shot victory in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 200, 16-under par.
Freshman
Aidan Tudor continued his strong play with a two-under 70 in the final round, making par on his first 10 holes of the day. The New Market, Md., native bogeyed No. 11 but reeled off three birdies in a six-hole stretch from 12-17 along with four pars for a three-day score of 204, tied for third and 12-under par.
Senior
Elias Becker netted eight pars with a birdie on the par-5 seventh hole on the front nine. The Mexico City, Mexico, native added five more pars and a birdie at No. 13 but faltered down the stretch with two bogeys in the last three holes for an even-par 72 and a 54-hole total of 210, tied for 15
th.
Sophomore
Niel Phillips recorded birdies on holes one, five and nine but also three bogeys on the front nine. The New Orleans, La., native collected six pars and three bogeys on the back nine for a final-round 75 and a three-day score of 226, tied for 105
th.
Senior
Colin Edwards started the round with a double bogey on No. 1 but registered six pars and two bogeys to finish the front nine. The Brookhaven, Ga., native birdied holes 10, 13 and 15 but also made two bogeys and a double on the back, shooting 77 for a 54-hole total of 227, tied for 111
th.
Sewanee plays again April 6-7 at the Capitol City Classic at the RTJ-Capitol Hill in Prattville, Ala.
