Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 10, 2017) – After a close match early, the Sewanee women's lacrosse team pulled away in the final 30 minutes Monday for an 18-11 win against regional-rival Piedmont at Puett Field.
The Tigers are now 11-3 overall while Piedmont fell to 9-7. Sewanee has now won three in-a-row and eight of its last 10 contests.
Sewanee opened the match with a goal by Alden Woolford. After Piedmont tied the contest, Sewanee answered back with goals from Mary Kate Myers and Catherine Crigler. Piedmont answered back with three straight goals. The Lions took their first lead when Rowan Bumpass scored with 18:26 left in the first half. Preston Cooper responded for the Tigers with a free position goal.
Unfortunately, Piedmont scored again right before the half when Cassidy Heflin scored a man-up goal.
In the second half, Sewanee responded in a big way. Elkins sparked an 11-3 run over the first 18 minutes. During that stretch, Brooke Winfield, Myers, Anna Comer, Crigler, Grace Zechman, Kit Sommi, Woolford, and Cooper all scored.
After Piedmont slowed the spurt with a goal at 15-9, Sewanee kept rolling. Myers scored two more times before Kelly Thomsen found the back of the net.
Overall, Sewanee outshot Piedmont 32-18. Despite losing in draws, Sewanee did have 29 groundballs and forced Piedmont into 30 turnovers.
Individually, Myers led Sewanee with five goals. Crigler, Cooper, Woolford, and Elkins all finished with multiple goals.
In goal, Brianna Young finished with three saves while Crawford Horan played the final 13:41 minutes in net.
Sewanee returns to action with a key 6:00 p.m. match against Oglethorpe, Wednesday.
