Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 24, 2017) – The Sewanee women's lacrosse team used a quick start to earn its ninth win of the season Friday, as the Tigers defeated Southwestern, 15-9, at Puett Field.
The purple and gold are now 9-1 this season after winning their fifth straight game.
Sewanee got off to a great start thanks to sophomore Kelly Thomsen. The Waxhaw, N.C., native scored the first three goals of the contest during a two-minute stretch. Those goals pushed Sewanee ahead 3-0.
After Madison Godleski scored for Southwestern, Sewanee answered back with seven straight unanswered goals. During that stretch, Brooke Winfield scored three times, Phoebe Stirm added two goals, while Anna Comer, Alden Woolford, and Catherine Crigler all added one goal.
The Pirates scored for the second time with 1:27 left in the first half when Hayley Donnelly found the back of the net.
In the second half, Sewanee stretched its lead to as much as 10 when Elkins scored off a free position shot. Additionally, Woolford, Crigler, and Mary Kate Myers also scored during the final 30 minutes.
Overall, Sewanee outshot Southwestern 30-24. The Tigers also had more successful clears and more draws.
Along with the offense, senior captain Melanie Matthews finished with six groundballs and one caused turnover.
Crigler, Winfield, and Hannah Tompkins all had two caused turnovers while Grace Fulton added three groundballs. Additionally, Anna Comer finished with a goal, two assists, one groundball, and two draws.
In goal, Brianna Young was outstanding with 10 saves and only two goals allowed.
Sewanee quickly returns to action with a noon match against Berry, Saturday.
