Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee earned a crucial three points on Friday night, as the Tigers used a 70th minute goal to defeat Hendrix, 1-0, Friday night at Puett Field. With the win, the Purple and Gold have nine points and are in sole possession of second place in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA).
The Tigers (7-6-0, 3-2-0) were able to get shots off in the contest, outshooting their opponents (3-12, 0-5), 26-5 in the contest. Thanks to the shots, the Tigers were able to get a flurry of corner kicks, 16 of them to be exact, with 11 in the first half.
But it was one of Alpo Sipilä's corner kicks in the second half that finally found the back of the net. In the 70th minute, Sipilä took the corner, and Kyle Johnston found the ball and struck the left corner for his sixth goal of the season.
Will Merriman (7-6-0) collected his fifth clean sheet of the season, saving five Hendrix shots.
Prior to the match, former Sewanee head men's soccer coach and current Hendrix coach Matt Kern made his first return trip to the mountain since leaving Sewanee in 2001. He coached the Tigers for 12 seasons, including a 2001 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament title and the Tigers' lone appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers return to the pitch on Sunday, hosting Rhodes at 2:30 p.m.
