SEWANEE, Tenn. – For about 33 minutes, it seemed like Sewanee was about to upset the fourth-ranked team in Division III men's soccer.

In the 43rd minute, sophomore Thomas McGowan took a foul inside the box and converted on a penalty afterward to give the Tigers (0-1) a 2-1 lead. But two unanswered second-half goals for the No. 4 Emory Eagles (1-0) thwarted the upset.

Emory struck first on a free kick from a few yards behind the penalty area, as Jeremiah Cateau veered one into the right side of the cage.

The Eagles continued to control the match for the first 15 minutes and were out-pacing the Tigers on shots 3-0. In the 18th minute, Sewanee junior Isaac Rasheed tallied back-to-back shots, with the first one saved by Emory goalkeeper Geoffrey Halpern and the second one wide left.

In the 35th, with the Tigers finding their feet, McGowan found freshman Wels McLeod on a touch pass. Emory's keeper was out of position, and McLeod fired it from long distance and found the back of the net for the equalizer.

McGowan's penalty made it 2-1 going into the half.

Sewanee had a few opportunities to extend the lead in the second half. Senior Stokes McConnell had a shot saved in the 54th, and freshmen Reed Henly and Alex Obester each fired shots on target in the 63rd but were denied by Halpern.

But in the 76th, Emory's Nick Carrano scored from a few yards behind the box right after an Emory takeaway. The Eagles followed with a coast-to-coast chance that ended in a Vincent Maraschiello game-winner in the 81st.

Sewanee out-shot Emory 19-18, and shots on target were tied at seven. Both teams had two corners apiece.
