Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. (April 24, 2016) – Despite an outstanding comeback effort, the Sewanee women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-12 contest in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament semifinals, Sunday, at South Campus Field.
The Tigers' season ends with a 7-11 record. Sunday also marked the final game for seniors Katie Riddle, Alexis Crittenden, Payton Fields, and Dori Wilson.
After Kit Sommi gave Sewanee an early 1-0 lead, Centre answered back two straight goals. The Tigers then added another goal when Meredith Sackett scored. From there, the Colonels outscored the Tigers 5-1 before halftime. During the Centre scoring spurt, the lone Sewanee goal came from Anna Comer.
Centre then extended its lead to 9-3 after the Colonels scored the first two goals in the second half. Down 9-3 with 23:33 left to play, Sewanee rallied.
After goals from Comer and Sommi, Sewanee eventually pulled to within four, 12-8, after Sackett scored with 7:40 left.
The Tigers and Colonels then traded scores for the next six goals. During that stretch, Alden Woolford, Payton Fields, and Kelly Thomsen all found the back of the net.
Down 15-11, Sewanee added its final goal when Fields scored after a draw win from Thomsen.
Sommi led the Sewanee offense with three goals, one assist, four groundballs, two draws, and three caused turnovers. Additionally, Sackett, Fields, and Comer finished with two goals each.
Jacqueline Anderson led Centre with five goals on 10 shots.
The Colonels will now advance to play Rhodes in next weekend's SAA Championship match.
