Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 22, 2016) – The Sewanee women's lacrosse team advanced to the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament semifinals Friday, as the Tigers defeated Berry 11-6 at Puett Field.
The Tigers will now travel to No. 1 seed Centre for a 1:00 p.m. (EST) game, Sunday.
After freshman Kelly Thomsen gave Sewanee an early 1-0 lead, Berry answered back with two straight goals. The Tigers responded when Kit Sommi scored an unassisted goal less than a minute later.
Minutes later, with Berry leading 3-2, Sewanee closed the first half with three straight goals. During that stretch, the Tigers had goals from Meredith Sackett and Sydney Beldock.
As the second half opened, senior Payton Fields pushed the Tigers lead to 6-3 with a man-up goal.
After a mini Berry spurt, Sewanee answered back again with another goal from Fields. Berry would pull to within one with 11:20 to play however, the Tigers outscored the Vikings 4-0 the rest of the game.
Sackett led the offense with three goals. Fields, Thomsen, and Katie Riddle each finished with two goals while Sommi and Beldock each finished with one.
Along with her goal, Sommi added two shots, two groundballs, three draws, and five caused turnovers.
In goal, Brianna Young finished with eight saves in the complete-game win.
