Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 16, 2016) – Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern rallied back in the second half for a 12-11 win over the Sewanee women's lacrosse team, Saturday, at Puett Field.
The win was the first time the Panthers have ever defeated the Tigers in a wlax contest. Sewanee dropped to 6-10 overall and 2-4 in SAA action. The Tigers earned the No. 4 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Sewanee will host Berry in the quarterfinals next Friday at Puett Field.
Sewanee opened the match with goals by Meredith Sackett and Katie Riddle. With the Tigers ahead 2-0 with less than three minutes off the clock, BSC finally got on the board when Amanda Amerson and Katie Gleeson scored back-to-back goals.
However, Sewanee answered back with goals the rest of the half from Riddle, Molly Elkins, Anna Cormer, Kelly Thomsen, and Sackett. The Tigers led 9-5 with 3:11 left in the first half before BSC closed the first 30 minutes with three straight goals from Amerson, Annie Scierka, and Natalie Daniel.
After having one of its most productive first halves this season, Sewanee's offense went cold the final 30 minutes.
The only two goals from the Tigers in the second half came from Thomsen and Relly King. Unfortunately, BSC scored four times with goals from Gleeson, Daniel, and Hannah Hudson.
Overall, Sewanee finished with an 18-7 advantage in draws. A big reason for the success on the circle came from Thomsen who had nine draws and a team-leading three goals.
The Tigers were undone late by 12 second-half turnovers and six saves from BSC keeper Chloe Massoni.
