Box Score ROME, Ga. (March 19, 2016) – Led by five goals and an assist by sophomore Relly King, the Sewanee women's lacrosse team defeated Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Berry 10-9, Saturday, at Valhalla Stadium.
A close game throughout, Sewanee (4-6, 2-2 SAA) was down 2-0 before Katie Riddle got the Tigers on the board off an assist from King with 17:13 left in the first half.
King then netted her first goal from Molly Elkins five minutes later.
After Lizzie Jones pushed Berry back in front 3-2, Sewanee scored back-to-back goals from Kelly Thomsen and King.
Unfortunately, Berry ended the half on a 2-0 run which gave the Vikings a 5-4 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, Sewanee answered back scoring the first two goals. Like the first two goals of the match, it was Riddle and King that scored.
After two more Berry goals, Sewanee took the lead for good after the Tigers exploded for four goals in a four-minute stretch.
Thomsen, King (twice), and Meredith Sackett all scored which gave Sewanee a 10-7 lead with 8:31 to play.
Berry did add two more goals however, the Vikings failed to score the equalizer before time expired.
Along with King, Thomsen and Riddle both finished with two goals. Between the pipes, Crawford Horan and Brianna Young combined for the win. Horan led the way with four saves.
Sewanee returns to action against SCAD with a 6:00 p.m. match on Monday at Puett Field.
