Box Score DEMOREST, Ga. (Feb. 21, 2016) – A late overtime goal by Maggie McDaniel gave host Piedmont a 13-12 win over the Sewanee women's lacrosse team, Sunday, at Walker Athletic Field.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-1 after their opening weekend while the Lady Lions are now 3-1.
Sewanee opened with a free position goal by sophomore Relly King with less than four minutes off the clock. After Piedmont tied the score, the Tigers answered back with goals from King and Sydney Beldock.
The Lady Lions then took a 4-3 lead after three straight goals over a four-minute stretch. King responded with her third goal before Piedmont answered back as McKinsey Douglas scored.
Sewanee closed the half on a 3-1 run as Alden Woolford, Brooke Winfield, and Katie Riddle all scored.
With the Tigers ahead 7-6 to start the second half, Kelly Thompson pushed the purple and gold ahead by two with an early goal.
The score remained close the remainder of the regulation when Winfield, King, Beldock, and Riddle scored again.
Unfortunately, with Sewanee ahead by two with under a minute to play, Caitlin O'Brien scored back-to-back man-up goals to send the match into overtime. The last goal came from O'Brien with only 13 seconds left.
In the extra period, Sewanee's best scoring chance came with 1:25 left. Thomsen had a free position attempt saved by keeper Blake Forrest.
After a clear by Piedmont, Jenna Smith set up the game-winner after Crawford Horan saved an attempt with 56 seconds left.
Overall, Piedmont outshot Sewanee 38-26. A big reason for the offensive advantage was Piedmont's ability to control the draw. The Lady Lions finished with a 16-9 advantage.
Individually, King led Sewanee with four goals and an assist. Alexis Narducci, McDaniel, and Douglas led Piedmont with three goals each.
Sewanee returns to action against Bates on Thursday, February 25th at Puett Field.
