Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 18, 2016) – Led by its powerful offense, in-state rival Maryville defeated the Sewanee men's soccer team 5-1, Tuesday, at Puett Field.
The visiting Scots, who are 13-2-0 overall, netted two goals in the first 10 minutes. Forward Tim Baker scored Maryville's first goal off a great cross from Caleb Lucas. Minutes later, Bret Thomas settled a high loose ball in the middle of the box. After he controlled the ball down, Thomas ripped home a low shot into the far post for the second goal.
Down 2-0, Sewanee did not quit. The Tigers quickly went on the attack. After a Maryville foul, sophomore Kyle Johnston redirected an incoming pass in the box over to Marco Randazzo. Randazzo then put the pass away for his fourth goal in the last two weeks.
Unfortunately, Maryville added one late goal in the first half when Thomas Palmer converted a penalty kick in the 40th minute.
Maryville added two additional goals in the second half after Sewanee was forced to play a man-down.
Overall, Maryville finished with 27 shots. Sewanee added three attempts in both halves. Keeper Will Merriman led the defense with seven saves while reserve keeper Ben Shankle added one.
Sewanee will close out its regular season with a 4:30 p.m. match against Centre, Saturday.
