Sewanee improves to 15-0 by outlasting unbeaten Piedmont, 18-14

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 8, 2015) – In a battle of regional unbeatens, the Sewanee women's lacrosse team outlasted rival Piedmont, 18-14, Wednesday at Puett Field.

The Tigers are now 15-0 and have won 23 straight matches dating back to the 2014 season. Piedmont dropped to 13-1 overall.

Piedmont entered the game averaging 17.31 goals per game. That ranked sixth nationally. The Lions also allowed 18 goals Wednesday after allowing only 5.31 goals per match prior to playing the Tigers. Sewanee, who ranks second nationally in scoring, has now scored in double digits against the third and sixth ranked defenses in NCAA Division III.

Despite having a different lineup throughout the match, Sewanee did not drop off. The Tigers opened by scoring the first three goals. Freshman Relly King, junior Wittney Reed, and senior Sally Anne Greenwood gave Sewanee a quick 3-0 lead through the first five minutes.

Piedmont answered back with two consecutive goals before Greenwood and Reed both scored again.

Sewanee would eventually take a 10-5 lead into halftime after Greenwood, King, Mallory Grimm, and Katie Riddle all helped the offense outpace the Lions.

The Tigers kept rolling to start the second half. A man-up goal by freshman Molly Elkins sparked a 3-1 Sewanee run. That gave the Tigers a 13-7 lead with 22 minutes remaining.

King and Riddle eventually pushed the Sewanee advantage to, 15-9, before Piedmont answered back. The Lions scored three straight goals to pull to within three, 15-12, with 8:06 left.

However, Sewanee answered every Piedmont run. Grimm and Greenwood scored back-to-back goals to keep the Tiger lead.

After two more Piedmont goals, freshman Kit Sommi closed the scoring on a free position shot with 32 seconds left.

Overall, Grimm, King, and Greenwood led Sewanee with four goals each. Riddle and Reed also finished with multiple goals.

Despite having a number of turnovers and being outdrawn, Sewanee was in the match behind its strong defense. The Tiger backline finished with 11 caused turnovers while Crawford Horan finished with 10 saves.

Sewanee will close out its regular season a noon match at Birmingham-Southern, Saturday.
