Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 26, 2015) – Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Rhodes snapped the Sewanee women's lacrosse team's 25-match winning streak and 17-0 record with a 11-8 win, Sunday, in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championship match at Puett Field.
The Tigers, who are ranked second in the region, will see if they will earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. With their win on Sunday, the Lynx earned the league's automatic bid.
Rhodes quickly jumped out in front when Kendall Cunningham scored with less than a minute off the clock.
Sewanee answered back with a goal from Wittney Reed off an assist from Mallory Grimm.
However, Rhodes scored back-to-back goals to take a 3-1 lead at 25:50.
Sewanee answered back over the next five minutes when two goals by Sally Anne Greenwood tied the game at 3-3.
However, Rhodes then took control of the first half with five straight goals to lead 8-3.
A goal by Ellie Murphy, and another by Katie Riddle, would cut the Tiger deficit to three, 8-5, with 4:35 left in the first half.
However, Rhodes answered back just under a minute later when Morgan Fuller closed the first half with a goal.
Sewanee started the final 35 minutes determined to comeback. The Tigers netted four of the first five goals to pull to within one, 10-9, with 19:34 to play. During that stretch Murphy, Molly Elkins, Payton Fields, and Kit Sommi all scored.
Just when it looked like Sewanee would complete the rally, Cunningham stepped up for Rhodes. The first-year attacker scored back-to-back goals in 21 seconds. Those scores stretched the Rhodes lead back to three at 12-9.
Riddle would score one more time for the Tigers with 8:45 to play. Unfortunately, Rhodes limited Sewanee's offense the rest of the contest. That included some key saves from Lynx keeper Sarah Daniels.
Riddle, Murphy, and Greenwood led Sewanee with two goals each. Cunningham paced the Lynx with four goals and one assist.
