Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 14, 2015) – The Sewanee women's lacrosse team pulled away from Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Centre late for an 11-7 victory Saturday at Puett Field.
After Centre took a 1-0 lead, Sewanee got on the board when senior Mallory Grimm scored off a pass from classmate Ellie Murphy.
The score would remain close throughout the first half. During the half, freshman Relly King and Murphy would also score. That included Murphy netting a late goal with seven seconds left right after Centre took a 4-3 lead with 53 seconds remaining in the half.
In the second half, the Colonels struck first. Audrey Powers netted her first goal off a free position shot with only 43 seconds off the clock. Six minutes later, Sewanee answered back. Again it was Grimm from Murphy.
Centre would briefly take the lead back at 6-5 when Andrea Wambaugh scored with a man down. However, over the next 11 minutes, the Tigers responded in a big way.
Two goals each by Payton Fields and Katie Riddle opened a 4-0 run by Sewanee, which gave the Tigers a 10-6 lead with just over a minute to play. Powers would add one final goal for Centre, before Murphy netted her hat trick as time expired.
Overall, Sewanee outshot the Colonels 33-16. Sewanee also forced Centre 30 turnovers and grabbed 23 groundballs.
Along with Murphy's three goals and two assists, Grimm, Fields, Riddle, and King all finished with two goals.
On defense sophomore goalkeeper Crawford Horan earned the win with three saves.
Sewanee continues its season with another important league contest next Saturday against Rhodes.
