Miscues lead to a season-opening loss against W&L

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Aug. 30, 2014) – Rival Washington & Lee took advantage of a number of Sewanee mistakes for a season-opening 3-0 win, Saturday, at Puett Field.

Despite coming out with toughness and lots of energy, Sewanee allowed a goal by Zach Colby in the 11th minute.

As the rain fell in the first half, W&L would score again when the Generals were awarded their first of two penalty kicks in the match.

Again Colby drove in the score with 17:42 off the clock. The W&L forward would go on and add another PK score midway through the second half.

"Washington and Lee is one of the better programs in the country," said Sewanee Head Coach Tony Pacella. "Against top teams, you cannot make mistakes like we did this afternoon. That being said, I thought our team played hard and continued to fight. We just have to learn from this match as we move forward."

Overall, W&L outshot the Tigers 18-6 and had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Individually, Colby finished with five attempts while Sewanee's Max Hawes led the Tigers with two shots.

Sewanee will look to bounce back on Sunday with a noon contest against Denison. The Big Red and Hendrix College finished with a 0-0 2OT scoreless tie in the first match of the Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational.
