Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 9, 2014) – A low shooting percentage limited the Sewanee women's lacrosse team in a 14-7 loss against Denison, Sunday, at Puett Field.
The loss drops Sewanee to 5-3 overall while the Big Red improved to 2-0.
Despite the lack of scores for the Tigers overall, Sewanee jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. After winning the opening draw control, Brita Brudvig scored with just 26 seconds off the clock.
Sewanee then extended its lead when Katie Riddle found Chelsea Staunton in front of the cage less than five minutes later.
The Tigers would eventually lead 4-2 when Payton Fields and Staunton scored.
Unfortunately, Denison would close the half on a 7-0 run.
After the Big Red opened the second half with another goal, Riddle pulled the Tigers to within five, 10-5, with a free position shot.
Ella Richardson and Riddle closed out Sewanee's goals late in the second half.
Despite the score, the statistics were fairly even. Sewanee won the draw control and groundball battle while Denison finished with more shot attempts and clears.
Individually, Riddle finished with two goals and a pair of assists. Freshman Melanie Matthews added four groundballs and Staunton finished with two goals, five shots, a groundball, and three draw controls.
Lauren Adams and Carol Allen led the Denison attack with three goals apiece.
Sewanee returns to Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with a key match at Centre, Thursday. That contest is schedule to start at 6:00 p.m. (EST).
