Sewanee's comeback attempt against Adrian falls just short

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 5, 2014) – Despite overcoming 18 first-half turnovers, the Sewanee women's lacrosse team fell just short of a comeback win as visiting Adrian held on for a 10-9 victory, Wednesday, at Puett Field.

With the loss, Sewanee dropped to 5-2 while Adrian improved to 1-0 in its season opener.

In the opening 30 minutes, the Tigers struggled in transition. With that, Adrian took advantage with six early goals.

Sewanee scored to open and close the first half. A shot by Wittney Reed and a score from Brita Brudvig made the Adrian advantage 6-2 heading into halftime.

Out of the locker, the Tigers responded. After another score from Reed, Mallory Grimm scored an unassisted goal with 26:05 remaining.

Sally Anne Greenwood then cut the Sewanee deficit to one, 6-5, less than two minutes later.

After a goal by Adrian, the Tigers then tied the score at 7-7 as Katie Riddle and Ella Richardson found the back of the net.

The Tigers and Bulldogs then traded scores over the next 16 minutes. During that stretch, Sewanee had goals from Grimm and Payton Fields.

Unfortunately, with 4:04 left, Adrian freshman attacker Brianna Plester scored her match-high fifth goal.

Sewanee did try to net the equalizer with under a minute of play, however shots by Riddle and Greenwood were saved by Bulldog keeper Jul Tehovnik.

Overall, the Tigers struggled after Adrian had 14 draw controls and Sewanee finished with a season-high 28 turnovers.

Despite those statistics Sewanee did outshot Adrian by 10, 27-17.

Individually, Greenwood finished with one goal, three assists, four shots, two groundballs, and three draw controls.

Additionally, Emily Hylton finished with six groundballs and one draw control.

Sewanee continues its tough non-conference schedule with a noon match against Denison, Sunday.
