Complete team effort helps Sewanee crush Carthage, 16-7

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 2, 2014) – Despite having to change its lineup, the Sewanee women's lacrosse team used a complete team effort to dominate visiting Carthage, 16-7, Sunday at Puett Field.

The Tigers improved their record to 5-1 while the Lady Reds fell to 1-1.

After an early score by Carthage, Sewanee responded with four straight goals. Brita Brudvig opened the Tiger scoring with a free position goal. Katie Riddle and Wittney Reed then followed with goals.

Carthage would find its offense midway through the first half, as Lauren Chatham netted a pair of shots.

However, Sewanee answered back again three straight goals. During that stretch Sally Anne Greenwood, Payton Fields, and Chelsea Staunton all fired in shots.

Eventually, the Tigers pushed their advantage to 12-5 as Greenwood and Riddle scored multiple times to end the opening 30 minutes of play.

Out of the locker room, Sewanee stayed on the attack.

Like she did in the first half, Brudvig found the back of the net first. Emily Hylton then added a goal before Riddle scored again on a free position attempt.

After a pair of Big Red goals, Staunton closed the scoring with a goal with 3:01 left.

Overall, the Tigers led in shots, draw controls, saves, and groundballs.

On defense, Sewanee finished with eight caused turnovers. That included four caused turnovers by Dori Wilson and two by Riddle.

As a team, the Tigers limited Carthage to 21 shots. On Saturday, the Lady Reds defeated Hendrix 22-2 on 28 attempts.

In goal, freshman Crawford Horan was outstanding. Horran finished with a career-high 11 saves.

Sewanee continues its non-conference schedule with a 6:00 p.m. match Wednesday against Adrian.
