Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 27, 2014) – Seven late second-half goals helped Augustana to a 16-13 win over the Sewanee women's lacrosse team on a cold Thursday evening at Puett Field.
With the loss, the Tigers fall to 3-1 while the Vikings improved to 1-0.
Sewanee opened the match with back-to-back goals. Ellie Murphy found Katie Riddle and then Sally Anne Greenwood assisted on a goal by Chelsea Staunton with less than 10 minutes off the clock.
After Augustana netted three consecutive goals, Sewanee answered back. Murphy took advantage of a free position attempt with an unassisted score with 14:08 remaining in the first half.
The Tigers then scored five straight goals as Greenwood, Murphy, and Riddle kept the offense rolling.
Down 8-3, Augustana did close the half on a mini-scoring run. The Vikings scored three goals during a minute and a half stretch to pull to within two, 8-6, at halftime.
Out of the locker, Sewanee came out firing. After winning a couple of draw controls, Wittney Reed and Murphy both scored.
After Hilary Kargl netted a shot from Rebecca Pollard, Sewanee responded with another goal from Riddle.
Unfortunately, Kargl started to warm up. After not scoring in the first half, the Viking attacker scored twice after Riddle's final goal.
The Tigers would score two more times over the final 18 minutes, however Augustana was too strong down the stretch. Of the final seven goals by the Vikings, Kargl finished with three.
Overall, behind a match-high 12 draw controls from Greenwood, Sewanee won the possession battle 18-13. However, Augustana edged out the Tigers in shots 32-29.
Individually, Murphy finished with four goals and one assist while Riddle and Greenwood both added three goals. Mallory Grimm, Reed, and Staunton also finished with one score.
On defense, Reed and Staunton caused two turnovers while Emily Hylton, Alexis Crittenden, Greenwood, and Dori Wilson all had at least two groundballs.
In goal, freshman Crawford Horan earned her first career loss despite making 11 saves.
Sewanee will quickly return to action with a 6:00 p.m. contest Friday against league rival Hendrix.
