Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 21, 2014) – Led by Lauren Avant's game-high 32 points, Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Rhodes defeated the Sewanee women's basketball team, 54-44, Friday inside Juhan Gymnasium.
Early on, Sewanee played the league-leading Lynx close. After a layup by Jamie Chauvin and a three by Savannah Rose, senior Paige Lowe connected on another three to give the Tigers an 8-4 lead with 13:44 left in the first half.
From there, Rhodes used a 14-2 run over the next seven minutes.
Both teams then played evenly until halftime.
Out of the locker room, Rhodes quickly built on its 31-20 lead. The Lynx scored seven out of the first nine points.
After a three by Lowe, Avant responded with a jumper on the next possession. Sewanee would then pull to within 10 after Haley Lyerly made a layup and Clarissa Medley hit a three.
Unfortunately, with the score 40-30, Sewanee would not get any closer. The Lynx used a 10-2 run to take command the next four minutes.
Overall, Sewanee outshot Rhodes with a 39.5 field goal percentage. The Tigers also grabbed 37 rebounds while the Lynx managed only 27.
The biggest difference the game was the Lynx's ability to score off of turnovers. Rhodes finished with a 23-8 advantage in that category.
Individually, Casey Hassett just missed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds. Chauvin added 10 points while Kayla Sewell finished with 12 rebounds, six points, and five assists.
Along with Avant, forward Symone Daniels scored in double figures for Rhodes with 10 points.
Sewanee quickly returns to action with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Hendrix, Sunday.
