SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Hannah Cleveland and
Olivia Falvey each posted double-doubles and Sewanee trailed by one early in the fourth quarter before a 10-0 run by Rhodes College, which held off the Tigers, 66-63, in women's basketball action Friday night in Memphis, Tenn.
Even after falling behind, 62-51, with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the contest,
Adison Howard and Falvey each scored field goals and Howard made a 3-pointer to pull within four with two minutes to play. Avery Marsh answered with a triple for the Lynx, but 1-of-2 free throws and a layup by Falvey after a Rhodes turnover cut the deficit to four again.
Alyssa Bongiovanni connected on 1-of-2 foul shots with 31 seconds on the clock for the Lynx before a putback by Cleveland made it a three-point game. Audrey Griffith missed two free throws with 15 seconds remaining, giving Sewanee one last chance, but the Tigers were unable to connect on three chances from behind the arc in the last 15 ticks.
Brianna Keating-Rendon back-rimmed a shot from the top of the key and Falvey's first 3-point try was blocked by Mackenzie McKown. Falvey got one last look but the shot was short and right.
Cleveland registered her third double-double of the season and first since December 8, finishing with 15 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. Falvey added 11 points, 12 boards and five assists. Howard collected 12 points,
Janie Boyd posted 11 and
Eliza Everett chipped in nine points and nine rebounds. The Tigers recorded 21 turnovers in the game, which led to 20 points by the Lynx.
Sewanee scored the first seven points of the game behind baskets from Everett and Cleveland and a 3-pointer by Howard, making 3-of-4 shots overall, but then hit only 2-for-16 the rest of the period and trailed, 15-13.
Boyd's jumper knotted the game at 15 to open the second quarter before Rhodes answered with a 12-3 spurt. Five different players scored for the home team during the run, including 3-pointers from McKown and Griffith.
Falvey's triple cut the deficit to six and three straight baskets by Boyd made it a two-point game at the half in favor of Rhodes, 31-29.
Boyd opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer for a brief Sewanee advantage, but a 14-4 run by the Lynx stretched the lead back to nine. Rhodes netted four triples during the stretch, two from Juliet Howell and one apiece by Marsh and McKown.
The Tigers would not go away, though, with a three by Cleveland making it a six-point game headed to the final period.
Keating-Rendon opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and Howard made a layup before two free throws by Falvey. Everett posted 1-of-2 foul shots and then collected a layup with six minutes to play, cutting the Rhodes lead to 52-51.
Annabelle Tobin made two free throws and a 3-pointer to start the decisive 10-0 spurt for the Lynx. Bongiovanni added a basket and Marsh connected on a triple for a 62-51 lead with 3:37 on the clock.
Sewanee continues a three-game road swing to end the regular season with a Noon contest Sunday at Millsaps College.
