SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Janie Boyd posted 19 points and eight rebounds and
Olivia Falvey added 17 points, but Sewanee got off to a slow start and never recovered, dropping a 77-55 decision to Millsaps College in women's basketball action Sunday in Jackson, Miss.
The Tigers started the game 4-of-15 from the field and committed five turnovers in the first quarter, trailing, 22-10, after 10 minutes. The team shot just 2-of-8 on field goals in the second period and added eight more turnovers, with Millsaps holding a 54-20 advantage at the half. The Majors scored 22 points in the first half off Sewanee turnovers.
Boyd and Falvey combined for 12 of the team's 14 points in the third quarter, including all 12 points in a 12-3 run to end the period. The duo also netted 12 of the club's 21 points in the fourth period. Sewanee made 9-of-14 free throws in the final quarter.
Millsaps scored the first 10 points of the game, including 3-pointers from Garin Freeman and Ashlyn Hafley, before a triple by
Hannah Cleveland got the Tigers on the board. Sewanee cut the deficit to five twice in the period, but the Majors netted the final seven points, starting with an old-fashioned 3-point play by Elyse Warren. Maddy Maw hit a layup and Warren made two free throws.
Eliza Everett connected on 1-of-2 foul shots to open the second period for the Tigers. Millsaps then reeled off the next 11 points, with Freeman hitting a 3-pointer followed by field goals from Tia Anderson and Warren. Freeman added two more baskets and the Majors held a 33-13 advantage less than four minutes into the quarter.
Millsaps ended the half with a 17-3 spurt over the final four minutes, with Maddy Maw posting a pair of 3-pointers and 10 of her 12 points in the game during the run.
Boyd scored more than 18 points for the fifth time in the last six games, making 6-of-16 from the field overall, 2-for-5 from 3-point range, and 5-of-6 free throws. Falvey finished 5-of-14 from the field with a pair of triples and 5-for-8 at the foul line. She added seven rebounds and four assists. Everett netted nine points as well for the Tigers.
Freeman led the Majors with 19 points while Warren collected 14 points and 17 boards in only 23 minutes of playing time.
Sewanee ends the regular season with a Noon CT contest next Saturday at Centre College.
