Box Score JACKSON, Miss. (Feb. 14, 2014) – A strong first half helped Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Millsaps down the Sewanee women's basketball team, 63-48, Friday inside the Hangar Dome.
Behind a 47.1 first-half field goal percentage, Millsaps built a 39-23 lead by halftime.
After the Majors took an early 5-0 lead, Jamie Chauvin put Sewanee on the board with a jumper.
Unfortunately, Millsaps then used a 12-2 run to slowly take command over the next four minutes. Despite back-to-back layups by Casey Hassett, the Tigers could not pull to within single digits the remainder of the contest.
Despite the early deficit, Sewanee did not quit. From the 7:16 mark in the first half, the Tigers managed to outscore Millsaps, 12-8.
Sewanee did outscore the Majors by one, 25-24, in the second half.
Overall, the Tigers made 35.6 percent of their attempts. Unfortunately, that included a 0-9 mark from outside the three-point line. In fact, that was the first time since Nov. 18, 2005 that Sewanee did not make at least one three-point field goal. That streak stood for 193 straight games prior to Friday's loss.
Individually, senior Paige Lowe finished with 15 points. Hassett also played well with a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double. Additionally, Chauvin finished in double figures with 11 points.
Velvet Johnson finished with a game-high 20 points while Kala Freeman added a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Majors.
Sewanee will quickly return to action Sunday with its final SAA road game of the season. The Tigers and rival Birmingham-Southern are scheduled to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
