Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 13, 2013) – The Sewanee women's lacrosse team closed out Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with an impressive 20-16 victory at SAA foe Birmingham-Southern Saturday at Panther Stadium.
With the win the Tigers improved 10-6 overall and a perfect 5-0 in league play.
Sally Anne Greenwood and Mallory Grimm quickly gave Sewanee an early 3-0 lead after the two attackers found the back of the net over the first three minutes.
After BSC netted a pair of goals, Grimm added one more score at the 21:35 mark in the first half.
Over the final 20 minutes of the half Caitlin-Jean Juricic, Molly Arnold, Ellie Murphy, Greenwood, and Grimm combined for six more scores.
Down three goals to start the second half, the Panther rallied. BSC scored four straight goals to start the second, which gave the Panthers an 11-10 lead with 23:07 left.
However, just when it looked like the momentum shifted in favor of BSC, Sewanee responded with a 7-1 run. Over a 12-minute stretch Grimm, Murphy, Arnold, and Olivia Vietor helped Sewanee take a 17-12 lead with 10:31 to play.
Sewanee then traded three additional goals with BSC when Vietor and Ella Richardson scored down the stretch.
Individually, Grimm finished with five goals and three assists. Arnold added four goals and an assist while Vietor and Murphy finished with three scores and at least two assists.
Defensively, freshman keeper Sammy Strasburger finished with 11 saves. Also on defense Anna Morrow added four caused turnovers and Dori Wilson finished with three.
Sewanee will now take a week off before hosting Transylvania on senior day Sunday, April 21. That match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
