Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 22, 2013) – A six-goal first half helped the Sewanee women's lacrosse team hold on against visiting Pomona-Pitzer, 10-9, Friday afternoon at Puett Field.
The win was Sewanee's third straight victory, which gives the Tigers a 7-4 record this season.
After Pomona-Pitzer netted two of the first three goals, Sewanee responded. The Tigers closed the first half on a 5-0 run with scores by Sally Anne Greenwood, Molly Arnold, Caitlin-Jean Juricic, and Ellie Murphy.
Out of the locker room the Tigers continued to expand their advantage. Two critical goals by Olivia Vietor and Brita Brudvig gave Sewanee an 8-2 lead.
From there Pomona-Pitzer rallied. The Sagehens scored six of the next seven goals to pull within one, 9-8, with 11:27 left.
However, a key goal by Greenwood pushed the Tigers' advantage back to two before Pomona-Pitzer added their final score.
Down the stretch Sewanee did an excellent job holding possession. After Sewanee wasted over two minutes in its offensive zone, Pomona-Pitzer was limited to one last shot with six seconds left. On that attempt, Logan Galansky's shot went wide.
Sewanee finished with nine players with at least one point. Along with goals by six players, Arnold, Mallory Grimm, Murphy, Chelsea Staunton, and Juricic added assists.
Between the pipes freshman keeper Sammy Strasburger finished with 12 saves.
The Tigers will now return to Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with a noon contest Sunday against Oglethorpe.
