Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 22, 2013) – Behind its best defensive effort of the season, the Sewanee women's basketball team rolled over visiting Warren Wilson College, 58-39, Friday inside Juhan Gymnasium.
Making their home debut, the Tigers (2-2) quickly raced out to a 12-0 lead after Haley Lyerly, Jamie Chauvin, and Kayla Sewell all scored field goals. During that early six-minute stretch, the Tigers also forced four turnovers.
After Warren Wilson finally got on the board with a jumper by Dani Henderson, Sewanee continued to play well. The Tigers shot 41 percent in the first-half to go along with 11 forced turnovers.
That helped Sewanee built a 16-point lead, 30-14, at halftime.
Out of the locker room, back-to-back jumpers by Chauvin and Paige Lowe pushed the lead to 20, 34-14, with 18:27 to play.
Moments later, Lowe extended the lead again with a three off of a defensive rebound by Sewell.
Warren Wilson briefly got back in the game, after a series of three-point baskets. Four consecutive makes from outside the arc cut the Owls' deficit to 15, 41-26, with 11:52 to go.
Sewanee would answer with another three by Lowe two possessions later. The Tigers would push their lead up to 21, 50-29, when Chauvin connected on a jumper at the 7:18 mark.
Over the final minutes of the game, Warren Wilson closed the contest on a 10-8 run.
Overall, Sewanee made 40.7 percent of its attempts, including 11-of-27 shots in the second half. The Tigers also outrebounded Warren Wilson by three, 42-39.
On defense, the Tigers limited Warren Wilson to a 21.1 field goal percentage and forced 16 turnovers.
Individually, Chauvin led all scorers with a game-high 19 points. Lowe also finished in double digits with 18 points.
Additionally, Sewell pitched in six points, a game-high 13 rebounds, two steals, and three blocks. Fellow forward Casey Hassett added one point, 10 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.
Dani Henderson and Jacina Hall led Warren Wilson with 13 points each.
The Tigers will look to win their second straight contest Saturday, when the Tigers host Wesleyan College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. inside Juhan Gymnasium.
