Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Sept. 2, 2012) – The Sewanee men's soccer team dropped its first match of the season Sunday, as the Tigers fell 2-1, in overtime, against No. 21 Washington University in Birmingham, Ala.
"I am very pleased with how we played and competed today, but I feel for the boys, they deserved better," said head coach David Poggi. "We played well enough to win against the No. 21 ranked team in the country. The effort and focus we played with was worthy of a better result. However, in the big picture, I feel good about the direction we are headed."
Sewanee (1-1) broke the scoreless tie when Dillon Flynn fired home a pass from Chris Haberstroh.
Minutes later, the Bears tied the match after Chris Haeberie converted a pass from Jonathan Lipsey.
Throughout the rest of the second half, Sewanee put up eight shots. However, each of the Tigers' attempts could not find the back of the net.
In the extra period, Washington quickly attacked. The Bears took two shots, which included the game-winner by Connor Roach.
"The equalizing goal was really a bit unlucky, but we responded well and had them on their heels the rest of the half," said Poggi. "We had enough chances to win this game in regulation. I hate that it did not work out, because once you get into sudden-death anything can happen."
Overall, Sewanee outshot Washington 11-9 while the Bears held a slight edge in corner kicks.
Individually, Samuel Edoung-Biyo led Sewanee with three shots. Flynn and Ford Emerson each added two attempts. Goalkeepers Derek Williams and Jacob Zalewski combined for five saves.
The Tigers return to action next Saturday, September 8 at Methodist. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
"This was a very good game for us to experience so early in the season," commented Poggi. "It will give us confidence going forward."
