SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 28, 2012) – After a quick start, the Sewanee women's lacrosse team never looked back as the Tigers blew out conference rival Centre, 16-7, Saturday, during semifinal action of the 2012 SCAC Women's Lacrosse Championships.
With the win, the Tigers improved to 11-5 overall. Additionally, Sewanee finished the season a perfect 2-0 against the Colonels.
Sewanee quickly got on the board when senior Meg Welton scored the first goal of the match, with less then a minute off the clock. Moments later, Welton was at it again when she assisted on Olivia Vietor's goal with 27:26 remaining in the half.
After Centre finally scored, Sewanee continued to surge. The Tigers opened up their lead even more, after Sewanee netted five out of the next six goals. The Colonels briefly stopped the Tiger attack when Emily Madden and Meg Hawthorne scored consecutive goals late in the first.
However, any Centre momentum was short lived, as Welton and freshman Ellie Murphy added back-to-back goals for Sewanee, right before the intermission.
In the second half, Sewanee extended its advantage to as much as 10, before Centre finally cut the final deficit to nine with 1:29 left.
Overall, Sewanee outshot Centre, 32-25. Additionally, the Tigers' defense forced 26 turnovers while senior goalkeeper Amy Nusbaum made 12 saves.
Offensively, Arnold led Sewanee with four goals and an assist. Welton and senior Page Carpenter scored three goals each, while Vietor (two), Murphy, Sally Anne Greenwood and Mallory Grimm also found the back of the net.
The second-seeded Tigers will now face top-seed Colorado College in the conference finals Sunday. Draw control is scheduled for noon at Harris Stadium.
