SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 30, 2012) – Missed chances and shots off the post hindered the Sewanee women's lacrosse team, as the Tigers dropped a 22-21 match against Berry College (Ga.) Friday, at Harris Stadium.
With the loss, Sewanee falls to 6-4 overall. The Tigers have also dropped two consecutive matches for the first time all season.
Down 13-9 at halftime, the Vikings would score three out of the first four goals in the second half. After
Anna Morrow scored off an assist by
Ellie Murphy, Berry continued its comeback. The Vikings tied the match at 15-15, after Kristan Dziurzynski, Katie Harper, and Blair Shupenko all scored.
Moments later, Sewanee briefly retook the lead when
Olivia Vietor scored a free position goal. Unfortunately, the Tigers' lead did not last long, after Berry scored five out of the next six goals.
However, Sewanee would not go down without a fight. Another free position goal by Vietor and a goal by
Meg Welton, put the Tigers down two, 21-19, with 1:23 to play.
After Welton won the ensuing draw control, the senior attacker assisted on
Shelby Koebley's goal 15 seconds later.
Sewanee then earned the next draw control, however a turnover inside the Tiger's offensive zone gave the ball back to Berry. Rachel Aiken then added the final Viking goal with 33 seconds left.
Individually,
Sally Anne Greenwood and Welton led Sewanee with four goals each.
Olivia Vietor finished with three goals, while
Molly Arnold,
Mallory Grimm, and Morrow all scored two.
Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper
Amy Nusbaum made 13 saves.
Sewanee quickly returns to action with an 11:00 a.m., SCAC match Sunday against Dallas.
