Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 25, 2012) – Behind a strong first half, the Sewanee women's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 Sunday with an impressive 14-9 win over Carthage.
The Tigers opened with 10 first-half goals, which in return put Sewanee up six by halftime. After Carthage pulled to within four, 10-6, the Tiger offense responded with 21 minutes left. Sewanee got four consecutive goals from Page Carpenter, Olivia Vietor, Mallory Grimm, and Sally Anne Greenwood over the next 15 minutes. In return, that gave Sewanee a 14-6 advantage, which put the game away.
As a team, Sewanee outshot the Lady Reds 31-27. Defensively, Sunday's contest marked the second straight game the Tigers held their opponent under 10 goals. Additionally, after she scored four goals Saturday, Carthage's Sydney Whitaker found the back of the net only once Sunday, after defender Emily Hylton shut down the Lady Reds' attacker.
Offensively, Meg Welton led the Tigers with three goals and an assist. Natalie Ceis also added three scores for Carthage.
Sewanee will look to keep its perfect record intact, when the Tigers travel to Danville, Ky., for a neutral site game against Denison. That contest will begin at 10:00 a.m. on the campus of Centre College.
