ROME, Ga. (Feb. 19, 2012) – The Sewanee women's lacrosse team moved to 2-0 this season, after the Tigers came-from-behind for an 11-10 victory Sunday against Guilford.
After finding themselves down 8-4 at halftime, the Tigers rallied in the second half behind
Meg Welton. The Germantown, Tenn., native scored three out Sewanee's next four goals, which gave the Tigers their first lead with 13:17 left.
After Guilford briefly tied the contest at 10-10, Welton was at it again. With 2:54 to play, the Tiger midfielder netted the game-winner unassisted.
In addition to the outstanding play of Welton, Sewanee got great production from
Sally Anne Greenwood. The freshman from Wyndmoor, Pa., earned five draw controls, which enabled the Tigers to hold possession in their offensive zone.
Despite playing in tough weather conditions, Sewanee's defense held Guilford in check as the game progressed. Goalkeeper
Amy Nusbaum finished the afternoon with 12 saves, eight coming after halftime.
Individually, Welton led the Tigers with seven goals and one assist. Greenwood, along with
Olivia Vietor, scored once while
Molly Arnold scored two.
The Quakers were led by E'Leyna Garcia, who finished with six goals and an assist.
The Tigers will look to stay perfect on February 26 when Carthage travels to Sewanee, for a noon contest.
