Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 20, 2012) – For the first time since the 2006-07 season, the Sewanee women's basketball team improved to 2-0 as the Tigers defeated visiting Agnes Scott 50-44, Tuesday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
Early on, the Tigers came out strong. After a three by Paige Lowe, the Tigers led 11-3 at the 14:30 mark. Later in the half, Sewanee eventually pushed its lead to 27-13 after Kayla Sewell hit a pair of free throws.
After the break, the Tigers quickly extend their lead to 18, 31-13, with consecutive layups by Sewell. However, just when it looked like Sewanee would cruise to an easy win, Agnes Scott responded.
Over the next four minutes, the Scotties made a 15-3 run. Sewanee finally stopped the comeback when Clarissa Medley hit a jumper with 13:56 left.
Sewanee would extend its lead to as much as nine, 41-32, when Jamie Samociuk hit a free throw with 9:43 remaining.
However, Agnes Scott would again respond when Erica Sims hit a three with 33 seconds left. That shot cut the ASC deficit to three, 47-44.
Fortunately, Sewanee stayed strong down the stretch. Despite the late 13-6 rally by the Scotties, Jamie Chauvin and Medley hit three-out-of-four free throws to seal the victory.
Overall, Sewanee finished 17-of-40 (42.5 percent) from the floor. That total included a 7-for-18 (38.9) effort from outside the three-point line. Along with their strong offensive play, the Tigers' defense forced 15 turnovers while Agnes Scott hit only 31.5 percent of its attempts.
Individually, Medley led the Tigers with her first career double-double. The LaFollette, Tenn., native finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Medley was joined by Sewell, who scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed nine boards.
Lowe was Sewanee's third double-digit scorer with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Arielle Register and Genefine Sapateh led Agnes Scott with 10 points each.
The Tigers will now take a couple of days off for Thanksgiving break. Sewanee returns to action Tuesday, November 27th at Emory. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (EST) in Atlanta.
